Why would a tooth need root canal treatment?

There are many reasons that a tooth may need to be treated.  They include:

  • Deep Caries (cavities)
  • Toothaches
  • Swelling
  • Fillings with secondary caries
  • Broken teeth
  • Injury to a tooth
  • Broken fillings
  • Tooth Abscess

How do I know if I need a root canal treatment?

Patients who need root therapy may have some of these symptoms:

  • Sensitivity to hot, cold and/or sweets
  • Pain when you touch the tooth
  • Persistent pain
  • Swelling
  • Discolored tooth
  • Chipped or broken tooth

Why do I need a crown over a tooth that has had root therapy?

During treatment, the infected pulp tissue is removed and the the tooth is filled with a bio-compatible material to fill the tooth cavity. A tooth that has been root canal treated is not as strong as a healthy vital tooth.  A crown must be placed over the root canal treated tooth to improve the strength and longevity of the tooth.  With good home care and regular dental visits, your root canal treated tooth and its new crown will last you for many years.
